About Us
My name is Dr. Eric Degis and I am a specialist in the conservative and rehabilitative management of Spine and Musculoskeletal disorders. Simply, I get people with spine and chronic pain, out of pain. I uncover what went wrong that caused their pain. I correct faulty movement that contributes to their pain. And, I then educate and guide them so that they can prevent "it" (Pain and dysfunction) from coming back.
Patients seek out my expertise for many reasons, but finding out why they are in pain, avoiding surgery if possible, and returning to their favorite activities are some of their greatest motivations. In addition, patients trust me to have their best interests in mind in both my treatment approach as well as in referring them to other specialists in the co-treatment of their conditions.
There is no shortage of doctors, therapists, and alternative healers who deal with spine and chronic pain issues. Some treat conservatively and some more invasively. Having been in your position as a patient 27 years ago, I know how challenging and frustrating all of this may seem.
In particular, Lumbar (lower back) related issues can be complicated to treat successfully. After herniating a disk in my lower back, I myself spent many years frustrated and disappointed by the poor care and the conflicting advice I received. There were just too many health care professionals claiming their expertise, and very few who came through on their promises. In the end, what I realized is that spinal and especially chronic issues needed more time and personal understanding than most professionals could give.
There are two major deficiencies that limit the effectiveness of treatment for chronic issues: "Lack of invested Time in the patients care plan" and "Poorly defined goals of the treatment plan itself".
Practitioners need too invest Time in uncovering causes of the pain. More Time is needed to educate patients as to why their issue occurred and what they can do to stop the cycle. Even more Time is needed to re-educate patients to move, build body awareness, and then to feel confident that they won't re-injure themselves. So, if pain reduction alone is the primary goal of treatment, most chronic pain sufferers will continue to be in pain as "flair-ups" will eventually re-occur because the causes were not addressed. If the goal of treatment were changed to "identifying and correcting the causes of the pain", then treatment becomes effective for the long term and pain decreases as a result.
My devotion to making a difference in people’s lives stems from my own failed experiences as a patient. As a provider, I have personally seen thousands of people suffer needlessly from inadequate care. For that, I devote each day to making sure that those people are given Hope again and that they too can be pain-free and able to live the active lives that they want, free of pain and dysfunction.
I make just one promise to every new patient I see: "I will do whatever it takes to get you better". That may mean that what I personally do helps them improve, or it may mean that I refer them to someone I trust who can help co-manage their care. Sometimes a team effort is needed to get people better long term.
I have based my entire 25 year career on earning patients trust. I take great pride in knowing that thousands of patients have trusted me with their health and that I continually follow through on my promise to them.
“The best way to find out if you can trust somebody, is to trust them.”
